Offices of the Lodge
A Masonic Lodge is a team effort and that team is made up of a number of what are known as ‘Officers’ i.e. they have an Office. The main Offices of the Lodge are:
- Worshipful Master
- Immediate Past Master
- Senior and Junior Warden
- Chaplain
- Treasurer
- Secretary
- Director of Ceremonies
- Almoner
- Charity Steward
- Senior and Junior Deacon
- Inner Guard
- Outer Guard or Tyler
Worshipful Master
The elected leader of the Lodge who presides over meetings, directs ceremonies, and represents the Lodge both within Masonry and in the community.
Immediate Past Master
The Master from the previous year, who supports and advises the current Master, often guiding him in the proper conduct of Lodge business.
Senior and Junior Warden

Junior Warden
The two principal officers supporting the Master: the Senior Warden is second in command, ensuring the Lodge runs smoothly and overseeing its closing, while the Junior Warden is third in command, responsible for harmony among the brethren and supervising the Lodge during refreshment.
Chaplain
Leads prayers and provides spiritual guidance, reminding Brethren of the moral and ethical foundations of Masonry.
Treasurer
Manages the Lodge’s finances, including accounts, subscriptions and payments, ensuring transparency and financial stability.
Secretary
The chief administrator, responsible for correspondence, records, minutes of meetings and communications with members and Grand Lodge.
Director of Ceremonies
Oversees ritual and ceremonial work, ensuring that ceremonies are conducted with precision and dignity.
Almoner
Looks after the welfare of members and their families, offering support, visits and assistance in times of need.
Charity Steward
Promotes charitable giving within the Lodge, organises collections and reports donations to the wider Masonic charities.
Senior and Junior Deacons
These officers guide candidates during ceremonies and act as messengers within the Lodge; the Senior Deacon carries communications from the Worshipful Master, while the Junior Deacon conveys messages between the Senior and Junior Wardens.
Inner Guard
Stationed inside the door of the Lodge, he ensures only qualified Masons enter and assists in maintaining security during meetings.
Outer Guard or Tyler
Positioned outside the Lodge door, armed with a drawn sword in tradition, he prevents intruders and ensures only duly qualified Masons seek admission.
